VISA.NET Shared Components, developed by the IVI Foundation, are vendor‑neutral .NET assemblies that define a common API for VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture). They enable .NET applications to discover instruments and perform I/O over standard interfaces—such as GPIB, USBTMC, serial, and TCP/IP—by using whichever compliant VISA implementation is installed on the system.
These shared components provide the standard types and interfaces relied on by many instrument drivers and applications, improving portability across vendors and simplifying deployment for both 32‑bit and 64‑bit environments. They do not include a VISA implementation or hardware drivers; a vendor runtime (for example, NI‑VISA, Keysight IO Libraries Suite, or another compliant VISA) must be installed separately.
Key benefits:
Typical uses include building test and measurement applications in C# or VB.NET, exchanging SCPI commands, and creating vendor‑agnostic instrument control solutions.
